Volvo Brake Pad Replacement: A Kiwi DIY Guide
> Your Volvo's brake pads are what bring you to a safe stop, so keeping on top of them is a no-brainer. Over time, they wear down, and your braking suffers. This is especially crucial for those trusty older Volvos like the 240 and 264. Let's get them sorted!
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Hear a squeal or grind when you hit the brakes?
• Taking longer to stop than usual?
• Brake pedal feeling a bit soft or spongy?
• Can see the pads are looking thin or damaged?
• That pesky brake warning light's lit up on the dash?
WOF Woes?
Worn brake pads are a surefire way to fail your WOF here in New Zealand. They need to be thick enough to do the job properly. Check the Land Transport NZ guidelines to be 100% sure.

Before you dive in, a few things to remember to keep you safe and the job clean:
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under your Volvo supported only by a jack. Use proper axle stands – it's not worth the risk.
• Keep it Clean: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Grab a can of Brake Cleaner to blast away the grime before you start. Makes the job much nicer.
• Protect Your Hands: A decent set of Nitrile Gloves will keep your hands clean and protected from all the muck.
• Don't Forget the Grease: A wee dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the right spots will keep everything moving smoothly and prevent squeals. You can grab a tube from Bob's shop.
• Eye Protection: Safety glasses are a must to keep brake dust and debris out of your eyes.
Expert Advice
Keeping your brake pads in good nick is vital for safe motoring, especially in older Volvos.
Fitment Notes
Double-check these pads are the right fit for your specific Volvo model and year. Some models have different brake setups. Always replace pads in pairs (both sides) to keep your braking even.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
