Steering & Suspension: Keeping Your Ride Smooth and Safe, Kiwi-Style!
> There's nothing worse than a wobbly ride or a steering wheel that feels like it's got a mind of its own, especially when you're cruising in a classic. Your steering and suspension are the unsung heroes of your vehicle, making sure you stay on the straight and narrow, your tyres last longer, and your journey is comfy. For our beloved older, heavier Aussie sedans like the Ford Falcon, Holden Commodore, and Chrysler Valiant, which have seen a fair few kilometres and perhaps some tough Kiwi roads, these parts can get a bit tired. Worn ball joints, control arms, or bushings? That means compromised handling and a less-than-safe drive.
What's Your Ride Telling You?
• Steering feels a bit vague, like it's drinking a flat white?
• Too much play in the steering wheel, like a loose tooth?
• Hearing clunks, rattles, or squeaks over those pesky bumps?
• Tyres wearing down unevenly, like they've been on a wild goose chase?
• Your vehicle's pulling to one side, almost like it's got a favourite cafe?
• Riding rough or leaning too much in corners, like a boat in a storm?
Will It Pass the WOF?
Let's be real, severely worn steering and suspension bits are a surefire way to fail your WOF. Any noticeable looseness in ball joints, tie rod ends, or control arm bushings will get you an immediate fail. Safety first, mate!
DIY or Call in the Pros?
Difficulty: 7/10 (This one's a bit more involved, usually needing special tools and a good understanding of how it all fits together)
Time Estimate: Allow 3-6 hours per side – depends on the part and how easy it is to get to.
Tools You'll Need: Jack stands (never get under a car supported only by a jack!), a sturdy floor jack, a torque wrench, a good set of sockets and spanners, a pry bar, a ball joint separator, and maybe even a spring compressor for certain components.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you dive into replacing those suspension components, let's make sure you've got all your ducks in a row for a safe and successful job. You don't want to be halfway through and realise you're missing a crucial bit!
• Safety First! Always have sturdy safety glasses to protect your peepers from flying debris and grit. And a good pair of heavy-duty nitrile gloves will keep your hands clean and protected from grease and grime.
• Loosen Up! Those old bolts can be stubborn. A good spray of Rust Penetrant a bit beforehand can save you a world of hurt and snapped bolts. Let it soak in while you grab a cuppa.
• Clean Up! Keep some Workshop Rags handy for spills and to wipe down components. A clean workspace makes for a happy mechanic!
• Smooth Operator! If you're dealing with ball joints or control arms, you might need a dab of Caliper Grease to ensure everything moves freely and quietly after installation. It's not just for brakes, you know!
