Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — TRW Edition
> Brake pads are the unsung heroes that bring your BMW 5 or 6 Series to a halt. They're the sacrificial lamb between the rotor and your rims, wearing down over time thanks to heat and friction. Letting them go too long? You'll notice it in your stopping power, especially crucial in these high-performance machines.
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Is she squealing like a banshee when you hit the brakes?
• Pedal feelin' a bit soft and spongy?
• Getting the shakes through the wheel when you brake hard?
• Taking longer to pull up at the lights?
• That pesky brake warning light glaring at you?
WOF Woes?
Worn brake pads are a guaranteed WOF failure. No arguments there. They're dead serious about brake performance at testing time.
DIY or Hand It Over?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A good Saturday project)
Time Needed: An hour or two per axle.
Gear You'll Need: Jack and stands, wheel brace, G-clamp or piston tool, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and maybe a new wear sensor for the Bimmer.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
• Safety First, Chur: Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack. Use proper axle stands – your life's worth more than a cafe lunch.
• Brake Cleaner: Give those rotors and calipers a good blast with Brake Cleaner to get rid of all that nasty brake dust. Trust me, your lungs will thank you.
• Glove Up: Keep your hands clean and protected with some heavy-duty Nitrile Gloves. Brake dust is minging stuff.
• Caliper Grease: A wee dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the right spots will keep everything moving smoothly and prevent squeals.
Bob's Two Cents
I reckon it's a no-brainer to keep your brakes in top nick, especially on a grunty European like your 5 or 6 Series. These TRW pads are a solid choice – known for quality, stopping power, and lasting the distance. They're right up there with the factory gear. Pop into Bob's Shop, and we'll sort you out with exactly what you need!
Fitment Notes
These pads are made to fit various BMW 5 Series (F10/F11) and 6 Series (F12/F13/F06) models, including the 520d, 525d, 528i, 530d, 535d, 535i, and 640i from around 2009 to 2018. Always double-check they're the right ones for your car's year, model, and trim – brake setups can be a bit different even within the same series.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
