Swapping Out Brake Pads — With TRW Taking the Lead
> Brake pads are the unsung heroes, clamped against the disc to bring you to a halt. They wear down over time, and buggered pads mean buggered braking. Especially important for Euro wagons like the Opel Combo and Fiat Punto that get a real workout on our roads.
What Clued You In?
• Brakes sound like a pack of seagulls arguing? Squealing or grinding is a dead giveaway.
• Taking longer to stop than a freight train?
• Pedal vibrating like a cellphone on silent?
• Brake pedal feels softer than a cafe lunch?
• Pads thinner than a credit card? (Less than 3mm, that is).
WOF Worthy?
Nah mate, worn brake pads are a WOF killer. They'll fail you faster than you can say 'gutted'. You need decent thickness and proper stopping power to pass the test.
DIY or Hand it Over?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A good weekend project)
Time Needed: An afternoon per axle
Gear You'll Need: Jack, stands, wheel wrench, G-clamp or piston tool, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, wire brush, maybe a brake bleeder kit.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Alright, before you get cracking on those brakes, let's make sure you're sorted. Safety first, always!
• Safety Glasses: No one wants brake dust in their peepers. Grab some Safety Glasses to keep your vision clear.
• Nitrile Gloves: Keep those mitts clean! Brake dust is nasty stuff. A decent set of Nitrile Gloves is a no-brainer.
• Brake Cleaner: Blast away that carbon dust and grime. Makes the job cleaner and the new pads work better. Brake Cleaner is your best mate here.
• Caliper Grease: A wee dab of anti-seize on the caliper pins keeps everything sliding smoothly. Prevents squeaks and premature wear.
Bob's Two Cents
I always say, don't muck about with brakes. Replace 'em the moment they look dodgy. TRW pads are a solid bet, known for doing the job as specified. Pop into Bob's Shop, and we'll sort you out with the right bits for your Opel Combo or Fiat Punto!
What Models do they fit?
These pads fit a bunch of Euro boxes, like the Opel Combo (2012 onwards), Fiat Grande Punto and Punto (2005 onwards), plus the Fiat Qubo and Fiorino D Multijet (from 2009/2010). Even the Abarth 500C, 595C, and 695C (2008 onwards). But double-check your year and model – even within the same range, things can vary.

🛠️ Bob's Pro Tip: Do the Job Right!
> If you're swapping out these parts on your vehicle;595;695, don't skimp on fresh rotors. Check out our compatible TRW Disc Brake Rotors (Part No. DF1745S) to ensure a perfect bed-in and get the job done properly first time!
🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
