Swapping Out Your Disc Brake Rotors — DBA Featured
> Disc brake rotors are absolutely vital for your Ford Mondeo or Volvo XC70 to stop safely. They take a hammering from heat and friction, especially if you're often slamming on the brakes or hitting those tough conditions. When they wear out, your braking goes to custard, and that's just not worth the risk.
Uh Oh, Sounds Like You've Got These Rotor Issues:
• Brakes are squealing like a pig or grinding away.
• Your brake pedal's vibrating like crazy.
• Taking way too long to stop.
• Rotors look like they've been attacked by a grinder, or are covered in rust.
• Brake pads wearing unevenly – never a good sign!
WOF Woes?
Worn brake rotors are a surefire way to fail your WOF here in NZ. They have to be a certain thickness and in good nick to pass the test. No point getting gutted when it fails.
DIY or Get a Pro?
Difficulty: 6/10 (tricky enough, but not impossible)
Time Needed: 2-3 hours per axle (that's per pair of wheels)
Gear You'll Need: Jack and stands (never skip on safety!), wheel wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner (essential!), and maybe a brake caliper tool (depends on your car).
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
• Safety First, Mates!: Never, ever get under a car supported *only* by a jack. Use proper axle stands – your life's worth it. And chuck on some Safety Glasses to keep the brake dust out of your peepers.
• Cleanliness is King: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Grab a can of Brake Cleaner to blast it all away before you start pulling things apart. Keeps things cleaner and stops the dust from getting everywhere.
• Glove Up!: Protect your hands with some Nitrile Gloves. Brake cleaner and old brake fluid aren't exactly skin-friendly.
• Grease is Your Friend: When reassembling, use a dab of anti-seize Caliper Grease on the caliper bolts and the back of the brake pads to prevent squealing. Just a tiny bit!

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
