Description

Disc Brake Rotor Replacement: The CARFIX Guide to "Stopping Power" — Featuring RDA
> Disc brake rotors are a seriously important bit of kit for your Mercedes-Benz SL or S-Class. They're what your brake pads grip onto to slow you down. Over time, especially in heavier cars or if you're a bit heavy-footed, these rotors can wear out, warp, or even crack. Not ideal, mate.
How'd You End Up Here?
• Brake pedal's doing the Macarena (vibrating like crazy)
• Brakes are squealing like a gutted possum
• Taking longer to stop than a freight train
• Rotors look like they've been through a war (cracked or grooved)
• Your brake pads are wearing unevenly - dodgy!
Will it pass WOF?
Buggered brake rotors are a surefire way to fail your WOF here in New Zealand. They need to be within the minimum thickness and free from cracks to pass the test. No compromises on safety, eh?
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10
Estimated Time: 2-4 hours per axle
Tools Required: Jack and stands, wheel wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, potentially a brake caliper tool.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you even think about cracking open the toolbox, let's sort out the essentials:
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under a car that's only supported by a jack. Get yourself some proper jack stands. No point in saving a few bucks if you end up in hospital.
• Brake Cleaner: Blast away that brake dust. It's nasty stuff and you don't want to be breathing it in. Grab a can of Brake Cleaner – makes the job cleaner and safer.
• Keep the Hands Clean: Brake jobs are mucky. Get some heavy-duty Nitrile Gloves to keep the grease off your mitts.
• Caliper Grease: Copper anti-seize grease is your friend when reassembling the calipers. Stops things seizing up.
• Eye Protection: Safety glasses are a no-brainer when dealing with brake dust and flying debris.
Expert Recommendation
Worn brake rotors are a major safety issue for your classic Merc. Getting them sorted keeps you safe and stops further damage to other brake bits. These RDA rotors are a good bet, but we've got options for every budget and driving style. Head down to Bob's Shop for a yarn – I'll make sure you get exactly what you need for your old girl.
Fitment Notes
Double-check the new rotors are right for your exact Mercedes-Benz model and year. Some models had different sizes. Always do both sides of the axle at the same time for even braking. No point in doing a half-arsed job!

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
