Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — A TRW Special
> Your brake pads are absolutely vital. They use friction to slow you down, and they wear out over time. This is especially true if you're always commuting or carting the family around in vehicles like the Honda Fit or Stream.
Tell-tale Signs It's Time
• Hear a squeal or grind when you hit the brakes?
• Brakes feel a bit slow to respond?
• Pedal feels soft, like you're stepping on a sponge?
• Can see the pads are looking worse for wear?
• Car pulls to one side when you brake?
WOF Worries?
Worn brake pads are a classic WOF fail here in NZ. Your pads need to be a decent thickness to guarantee safe stopping. No point getting caught out.
DIY or Hand It Over?
Difficulty: 6/10
Time Needed: 2-3 hours
Gear You'll Need: Jack, jack stands, wrench set, socket set, brake cleaner, C-clamp or brake spreader, torque wrench.
Expert's Two Cents
Running on worn brake pads is a no-brainer safety risk. Changing them pronto is key, especially if you're driving the kids around in the Honda Edix or Acura RL.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Right, before you get cracking, a few quick words from yours truly. First, safety! Never get under a car that's only held up by a jack; always use proper Jack Stands. Get yourself some Safety Glasses to keep the brake dust out of your eyes. Brake dust is nasty stuff, so grab some Nitrile Gloves too. You'll also want to give everything a good blast with Brake Cleaner to get rid of that carbon dust. When reassembling, use a dab of Anti-Seize Grease on the caliper bolts to stop them seizing up next time.
Fitment Notes
Make sure you get the right pads for your Honda model and year. Some models have different brake setups depending on the trim. Always swap out the pads on both sides of the axle at the same time, so your braking is even.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
