Description

Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — Featuring TRW
> Brake pads, eh? They're the unsung heroes that wear down so you don't have to! In your average car, like a Lancer or Wingroad, good brakes are a no-brainer for keeping safe, especially on our winding roads.

Spotting the Warning Signs
• Brakes sound like a flock of seagulls, or maybe a coffee grinder?
• Pedal feels soft as butter, or you're not stopping like you used to?
• Getting the shakes when you hit the brakes!
• Car pulling to one side? That's not ideal, mate.
• Dashboard light screaming at you?

WOF Woes?
Worn brake pads? Gutted, mate, that's a WOF fail every time. They need to be up to scratch to keep you safe and legal on the road.

DIY or Get a Pro?
Difficulty: 5/10 (Tricky)
Time Needed: An afternoon, give or take.
Gear You'll Need: Jack, stands (never skip these!), lug wrench, a G-clamp or piston tool, spanners, brake cleaner, torque wrench, safety glasses, and gloves.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Alright, before you get stuck in, let's make sure we're doing this right, eh?
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack. Jack stands are your best friend here. Nitrile Gloves are also a good idea to keep your hands clean, brake dust is nasty stuff.
• Cleanliness is Key: Before you even think about fitting those new pads, give everything a good blast with Brake Cleaner. Get rid of all that brake dust and grime. It'll help everything seat properly and reduce noise. Plus, it's satisfying!
• Protect and Prevent: A little dab of anti-seize on the caliper bolts will make your life much easier next time you're in there. Trust me on this one.
• Lube It Up: Make sure the caliper pins are sliding freely. A bit of silicone-based lubricant will keep things smooth and prevent uneven wear. No one wants squeaky brakes!

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
