Citroen GS Brake Pad Replacement: A Kiwi DIY Guide
> Your classic Citroen GS relies on its brake pads to pull you up safely. They wear down over time, like a good pair of gumboots, and when they do, your braking suffers. Especially on an older car where everything's working a bit harder.
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Hear a squeal or grind when you hit the brakes?
• Taking longer to stop than you used to?
• Brake pedal feeling a bit soft and spongy?
• Can see the pads are looking thin or damaged?
• Brake warning light's lit up on the dash?
WOF Woes?
Worn brake pads are a dead cert for failing a WOF here in NZ. Land Transport NZ are pretty strict on brake pad thickness for good reason. Check their guidelines to be sure.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Alright, before you dive in, let's make sure you're sorted. Brakes are safety-critical, so no cutting corners!
• Safety First: Never, ever get under a car supported *only* by a jack. Use proper axle stands – your life's worth more than a cafe lunch!
• Cleanliness is Key: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Grab some Brake Cleaner spray to blast it away. Makes the job easier and safer.
• Protect Your Hands: Those brake components can be sharp and grimy. A decent pair of Nitrile Gloves will save your skin.
• Don't Forget the Grease: A dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the pad contact points will keep things moving smoothly and prevent squeals.
• Eye Protection: Get yourself some Safety Glasses, especially when using the brake cleaner. You don't want brake dust in your eyes!
Fitment Notes
Double-check those pads fit your specific Citroen GS model and year. Always replace pads in pairs (both sides of the axle) to keep your braking even.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
