Volkswagen 411 AN (1973–1975)

The Volkswagen 411 and 412, produced from 1968 to 1974, represent VW's attempt to move upmarket with a larger, more sophisticated vehicle. While not as iconic as the Beetle or Kombi, the 411/412 offered more space, comfort, and features. These later models from 1973-1975 represent the final years of production and might be rarer finds in New Zealand.

Known issues

Rust is a major concern, especially in the sills, floor pans, and around the wheel arches. Fuel injection systems can be problematic, requiring specialist knowledge to diagnose and repair. Suspension components are also prone to wear and tear. The electrical system should also be checked for shorts.

WOF tips

WOF inspectors will be vigilant for rust, particularly in structural areas. Brake performance, including the handbrake, is a key check. Suspension wear, including ball joints and bushes, will be flagged. Ensure all lights function correctly, and the tyres are in good condition.

About the Volkswagen 411 AN

These models featured a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine, but with fuel injection in some variants, offering improved performance and efficiency compared to earlier carbureted models. The 411/412 came in sedan and wagon body styles. While still rear-wheel drive, they provided a more refined driving experience than earlier VWs.
