Morris Marina A-Series 1275cc (1974–1981)

The Morris Marina, a mass-market family car designed to compete with the Ford Cortina and Vauxhall Viva, represents a slice of British motoring history. Known for its conventional engineering and a conservative design, it was available in saloon, coupe, and estate body styles. It was a common sight on New Zealand roads and was at times a sales hit in the region. So what do you need to know if you're buying one now?.

Known issues

Rust is the Marina's biggest enemy, affecting the sills, floors, and wheel arches. Engine problems, such as oil leaks and worn valve guides, are common. Suspension wear, particularly in the front suspension, is also prevalent. Electrical gremlins can also cause headaches.

WOF tips

For a WOF inspection, ensure the brakes are in good condition, and all suspension components are secure. Check wear in the suspension parts and look for leaks or corrosion. Be sure to check lighting systems as well as rust in common trouble areas. Tyres should be above the bare minimum too.

About the Morris Marina A-Series 1275cc

The Marina was designed to be simple and affordable. Its conventional engineering made it relatively easy to maintain, and it was a functional and practical car for its time. Later renamed as the Ital and discontinued, the Marina has still earned a place in many hearts. Look for rust, engine ware and ensure you check the components of the interior for any ware and tear from the sun. As a simple machine though, there are not too many technological hurdles when maintaining them.
