The International Scout 80, produced from 1960 to 1965, is a rugged and iconic 4x4 that evokes a sense of adventure. While not as commonly seen as Land Rovers in New Zealand, these tough vehicles do have a small but loyal following. They represent a classic era of off-road functionality.
Rust in body panels, chassis, and floor pans, engine wear, carburetor problems, cooling system issues, brake system corrosion, suspension wear, electrical problems, and transfer case/differential issues.
Rust is a primary WOF concern. Underbody, chassis, sills. Brake lines and hoses, lights, and suspension components must all be in good working order. 4WD functionality - must engage and disengage correctly.
The Scout 80's simple design makes it relatively easy to work on, but finding parts can be a challenge. Rust is a significant issue in New Zealand's climate, and the Scout 80 is particularly prone to it. Engine and drivetrain components are generally robust if maintained. Many owners upgrade the engine and transmission to something more modern.
