The Fiat Duna (sedan) and Elba (wagon) offered affordable motoring in the late 80s and early 90s. While not known for performance or luxury, they provided basic transportation. Their simplicity, however, doesn't negate the need for a thorough inspection before purchasing, especially given their age.
Rust is a major concern, particularly in areas prone to moisture. Suspension components wear out, affecting handling. Carburettor problems are frequent. Also, inspect for oil leaks, especially from the engine and gearbox. Interior trim is known to be fragile and prone to cracking.
Scrutinize for rust in the usual spots: sills, wheel arches, and floor pan. Check brake condition, including the handbrake. Suspension wear (ball joints, bushings) is a common issue. Lights must be functioning correctly. Exhaust leaks can also cause a WOF failure. Pay attention to the overall structural integrity of the vehicle.
The Duna/Elba's appeal was its low price point. The 1.3L petrol engine, while underpowered, proved relatively reliable. The Elba wagon offered a reasonable amount of cargo space for its size. However, build quality and materials weren't the best, contributing to potential long-term durability issues.
