Citroen Mehari M28/1 (AK2) (1968–1979)

The Citroen Mehari, produced from 1968 to 1979, is a fun and quirky beach car that, while uncommon, has a small but enthusiastic following in New Zealand. Known for its lightweight plastic body and simple mechanics, the Mehari offers a unique driving experience that's perfect for sunny days and off-road adventures. Owning a Mehari in NZ requires an appreciation for its simplicity and a willingness to embrace its rugged nature.

Known issues

While the plastic body resists rust, it can crack or become brittle with age and sun exposure. The chassis is still susceptible to rust, especially in coastal areas. The air-cooled engine can overheat in hot conditions, and the carburetors require periodic adjustment. The suspension, while soft, is prone to wear and tear.

WOF tips

WOF inspections will focus on the condition of the chassis (rust), brake performance, headlight alignment, and the overall structural integrity of the plastic body. Check the seatbelts work properly, since not all originally had belts installed or had correct mounting points. Check if indicators are installed, but they may have been an accessory at time of purchase.

About the Citroen Mehari M28/1 (AK2)

The Mehari's most distinctive feature is its ABS plastic body, which is resistant to rust and lightweight. The simple mechanicals, based on the Citroen 2CV, are generally reliable but require regular maintenance. The open-top design makes it ideal for summer driving, but less practical in inclement weather. Parts availability is generally good, thanks to a strong network of Citroen enthusiasts and suppliers. Its 2WD so don't expect it to go everywhere!
