Brake Pad Replacement: A Kiwi DIY Guide
> Brake pads are what slow you down, mate. They're your car's connection to stopping. Over time, especially if you're giving it heaps in a grunty BMW 3 Series or Z4, they wear out, and that affects your braking. Don't get caught out with a dodgy WOF.
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Squealing like stuck pigs when you hit the brakes.
• Braking feels like you're wading through treacle.
• Pedal feels soft as butter.
• Pads look thinner than a cafe lunch slice of ham.
• Car pulls to one side when you brake – that's a worry, eh?
Will it pass WOF?
Worn brake pads are a dead cert for a WOF failure here in NZ. Your pads have gotta be thick enough to pull you up safely. No two ways about it.

Expert Recommendation
Replacing your brake pads? It's a no-brainer for safety. Worn pads mean longer stopping distances, which is risky, especially in a BMW. Bob @ CARFIX is always here to help you find the perfect match for your BMW. Pop into Bob's Shop for a yarn!
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you get cracking, a bit of prep goes a long way. Brakes create nasty carbon dust, so safety glasses are a must to keep the grit out of your eyes, and grab some Nitrile Gloves to keep your hands clean. A can of Brake Cleaner is gold for blasting away brake dust and grease. And don't forget a smear of anti-seize caliper grease on the pad backing plates to stop any future squealing.
Fitment Notes
Make sure those pads are the right fit for your BMW model and brake caliper. Some models need different shapes or sizes. Always do both sides of the axle at once to keep the braking even.
Bob's Tip: Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack! Use proper jack stands – your life's worth it!

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
