Brake Pad Replacement Guide — Sorted with RDA
> Your Mercedes-Benz's brake pads are mission-critical. They wear down over time as they clamp on the rotors, bringing you to a halt. For performance machines like the A-Class or GLA-Class, keeping your brakes tip-top is a no-brainer for safety, especially with our diverse Kiwi roads.
Symptoms That Led You Here
• Squealing like a pig when you brake
• Taking ages to stop
• The steering wheel's doing the hokey-pokey when you brake
• Your brake pedal feels like a sponge
• Dashboard's lit up like a Christmas tree with brake warnings
• Pads are thinner than a cafe lunch (less than 3mm)
Will it pass WOF?
Nah mate, worn brake pads are a dead cert for a WOF failure here in NZ. If they're too thin, wearing unevenly, or covered in gunk, you'll be walking home. Stopping safely is the whole point!
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A bit of a mission)
Estimated Time: Give it 1-2 hours per axle
Tools You'll Need: Jack and stands, wheel brace, a G-clamp or piston tool, spanners, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and maybe a wire brush.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under a car that's only held up by a jack. Use proper axle stands – your life's worth more than a new set of brake pads!
• Keep it Clean: Brakes generate a mountain of nasty carbon dust. Always use Brake Cleaner to blast away the muck *before* you start pulling things apart. Keeps the lungs happy, and the job cleaner.
• Glove Up: Brake cleaner and old brake dust aren't exactly skin-friendly. A decent set of Nitrile Gloves will keep your hands clean and protected.
• Don't Forget the Grease: A little dab of anti-seize Caliper Grease on the caliper pins and pad contact points will keep things moving smoothly and prevent annoying squeals. Copper grease works too.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
