Description

Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — With RDA
> Brake pads are what slow you down, turning all that Explorer energy into heat when they squeeze against the rotors. Naturally, they wear out over time, which means less stopping power. Don't get caught short, especially in a bigger rig like yours.
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Brakes squealing like a rusty gate?
• Pedal feeling a bit soft or spongy?
• Steering wheel juddering when you brake?
• Taking longer to pull up than usual?
• Pads looking a bit thin (less than 3mm of meat left)?
WOF Worries?
Worn-out brake pads are a no-go for your Warrant of Fitness. You'll need decent thickness and proper braking to pass the test, so get them sorted!
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A Decent Challenge)
Time Needed: An hour or two per axle
Gear You'll Need: Jack, stands, wheel brace, G-clamp or piston tool, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, wire brush, and maybe some caliper grease.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under a car that's only held up by a jack. Use proper axle stands – it's a no-brainer.
• Keep It Clean: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Give everything a good blast with Brake Cleaner before you start pulling things apart. Minimise dust!
• Glove Up: Protect your mitts with some heavy-duty Nitrile Gloves. Keeps the grease and grime off.
• Lube It Right: A little dab of anti-seize Caliper Grease on the caliper pins helps keep things moving smoothly and prevents annoying squeals.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
