Description

Ford F-150 Brake Pad Swap: The Kiwi DIY Guide (RDA Focus)
> Your Ford F-150's brake pads are what clamp down on the rotors to bring you to a halt. Simple as that. But after heaps of use, they wear down, especially if you're regularly towing or carrying heavy gear. This means less stopping power when you need it most.

Uh Oh, Are Your Brakes Telling You Something's Up?
• Hear a squeal or grinding noise when you hit the brakes? That's not good.
• Braking feels spongy, or you're taking longer to stop?
• The steering wheel or brake pedal vibrates when braking?
• Pads look super thin or worn out?
• That pesky brake warning light is glaring at you?

Will it pass WOF?
Worn-out brake pads are a dead cert for a WOF failure here in NZ. They need to be thick enough to do the job properly. Check the official Land Transport NZ guidelines to be 100% sure.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Alright, before you dive in, a few quick pointers from yours truly to make sure you get the job done safely and properly.
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under your F-150 when it's supported only by a jack. Use proper jack stands – your life depends on it! And safety glasses are a no-brainer when working with brakes; you don't want brake dust in your eyes.
• Keep it Clean: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Grab a can of Brake Cleaner to blast away all that black carbon dust when you've got the calipers off. Keeps everything working smoothly and stops squealing.
• Protect Your Investment: A little smear of anti-seize caliper grease on the right spots (check a guide!) will stop things seizing up later. Makes the next brake job easier too.
• Hand Protection: Brake cleaner and brake fluid aren't friendly on the skin. A decent pair of Nitrile Gloves will keep your hands clean and protected.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
