Description

RAV4 Brake Pad Swap: A Kiwi DIY Guide
> Your Toyota RAV4's brakes are arguably its most important safety feature. Over time, brake pads wear down, especially if you're doing a lot of city driving or towing the boat. Don't get caught out with a WOF failure or, worse, an accident! This guide walks you through swapping out your brake pads with reliable RDA pads.

Spotting Trouble: Signs You Need New Pads
• Hear a nasty squealing or grinding when you hit the brakes?
• Braking feels a bit weak, and you're taking longer to stop?
• Brake pedal feels soft and spongy? Not good, mate.
• Can see the pads are looking thin or damaged?
• That pesky brake warning light's lit up on the dash?

Will it pass WOF?
Worn-out brake pads are a dead cert for a WOF failure. They need enough meat on them to pull you up safely. Check the official Land Transport NZ guidelines to be sure.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Alright, before you get stuck in, let's make sure you're set up for success. Safety first, always!
• Safety Glasses: Protect your peepers from brake dust and debris. No one wants a trip to the eye doctor.
• Nitrile Gloves: Keep your hands clean and away from brake dust. Trust me, you don't want that stuff on your cafe lunch.
• Brake Cleaner: Blast away all that nasty carbon dust from the brake components. Makes the job cleaner and safer. Brake Cleaner
• Caliper Grease: A little dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the caliper pins ensures everything moves smoothly and prevents annoying squeaks. Don't go overboard!
• Jack Stands: Never, ever get under a car that's only supported by a jack! Jack stands are non-negotiable for safety.
• Torque Wrench: Tighten those nuts to spec! Too tight and you risk stripping the threads, not tight enough and your wheels could come loose. Torque Wrenches

Fitment Notes

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
