Description

Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — Feat. RDA
> Brake pads are those bits that rub on your brake rotors, turning all that forward motion into heat to slow you down. Over time, they wear away, and that means less stopping power. This is super important for vans like the VW Transporter or Renault Trafic that are often lugging around heavy loads or a bunch of people.
What Clued You In?
• Brakes squealing like stuck pigs, grinding, or making metallic noises?
• Braking feels weak as, or the pedal feels spongy?
• Feeling judders through the steering wheel or brake pedal when you hit the anchors?
• Taking way longer to stop than usual?
• Pads are looking thin – less than 3mm of meat left?
WOF Worthy?
Nah mate, worn brake pads are a major safety issue and a guaranteed WOF failure here in NZ. They need enough meat on them to stop you safely.
DIY or Get a Pro?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A good weekend job)
Time Needed: An hour or two per axle
Gear You'll Need: Jack, stands, wheel wrench, C-clamp or piston tool, spanner set, torque wrench, wire brush, brake cleaner, gloves, and eye protection.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you even think about cracking those wheel nuts, let's yarn about doing this job properly. Safety first, always! Never, ever get under a vehicle supported only by a jack – use proper axle stands. Get yourself some Nitrile Gloves to keep the hands clean from all that brake dust, and safety glasses are a must to keep the muck out of your eyes.

Now, braking creates dust. Nasty brake dust. Grab a can of Brake Cleaner to blast away the carbon buildup around the calipers and rotors. It'll help everything seat properly and stop any annoying squeals. While you're at it, a little dab of anti-seize grease on the caliper bolts will make life easier next time you're in there. These little things make all the difference in getting a top-notch, safe job done.
Expert Recommendation
Bob @ CARFIX reckons you should swap those pads as soon as you see any signs of wear. Keeps you safe and stops you from wrecking your rotors or calipers. The RDA RDB1389 pads are a great pick for their consistent performance and toughness – ideal for vans like the Transporter and Trafic. Fitment Notes
These pads are made for a bunch of VW Transporter, Caravelle, and Kombi models from '90 to '09, plus Nissan Primastars and Renault Trafic IIs from '06 on. Triple-check your year, make, model, and engine (TDI, D, VR6, dCi – they're all different) against the list to make sure they're a perfect match.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
