Description

Swapping Out Your Disc Brake Rotors — RDA Style
> Your disc brake rotors are the unsung heroes of stopping power. They wear out over time from the pads grinding on them, especially on tough trucks like the Land Cruiser Prado and Hilux, or even the sporty VW Beetle TSI. If they're warped or too thin, your braking goes to custard, and that's no good.

What Clued You In?
• Brakes sound like a flock of seagulls (squealing).
• Feels like a washing machine when you hit the brakes (vibration).
• Takes forever to stop, feels like you're ice skating.
• Rotors look like they've been attacked by a grinder.
• Your brake pads are wearing out unevenly.

Will it pass WOF?
Buggered brake rotors are a surefire way to fail a WOF here in NZ. They gotta be above the minimum thickness and not too damaged to pass the test.

DIY or Workshop?

Difficulty: 6/10
Estimated Time: An hour or two per rotor
What You'll Need: Jack and stands, wheel wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and new brake pads (good idea while you're at it).

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist

Alright, before you get stuck in, a few quick pointers to keep things safe and tidy:
• Safety First, Mates: Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack. Use proper axle stands – it's a no-brainer. And chuck on some safety glasses to keep the brake dust out of your peepers!
• Keep it Clean: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Grab a can of Brake Cleaner to blast away the muck before you start pulling things apart. Makes the job way nicer.
• Lube is Your Friend: A little anti-seize caliper grease on the caliper bolts will make your life easier next time you're in there. Trust me.
• Glove Up: Protect your hands from the grime with some Nitrile Gloves. Your skin will thank you for it.

Expert Recommendation
Worn rotors are a serious safety risk in your Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Hilux, or VW Beetle TSI. New ones mean you stop properly. RDA's a good starting point, but CARFIX has plenty of options to match your wallet. Bob @ CARFIX is always keen to help you find the right part for your ride. Pop into Bob's Shop for a yarn!

Fitment Notes
Double-check the new rotors fit your exact model and year. Some have different sizes or setups. Always do both rotors on an axle at the same time for even braking. No point in doing half a job.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
