Description

Swapping Out Your Disc Brake Rotors — The RDA Way
> Disc brake rotors are a seriously important bit of kit for your car's braking. They wear down over time thanks to the pads rubbing on them, especially if you give your Golf GTi or Audi A3 a bit of stick. When they're worn, stopping can be a lottery, so it's best to get 'em sorted.

Symptoms That Led You Here
• Squealing like a stuck pig when you brake
• Your brake pedal's vibrating like crazy
• Brakes feel like they're not doing much
• Rotors look like they've been attacked with a grinder
• ABS kicking in when you're just trying to slow down gently

Will it pass WOF?
Dodgy brake rotors are a surefire way to fail a WOF here in NZ. They need to be within the thickness limits and in good nick to pass the test.

DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10
Estimated Time: 2-3 hours per axle
Tools Required: Jack and stands, wheel wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and maybe a brake caliper piston compression tool.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
• Safety First, Mates!: Brakes are life savers, so disconnect the battery before starting. Never, ever rely on just a jack. Use proper axle stands – your life's worth more than a cafe lunch.
• Keep it Clean: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Give everything a good blast with Brake Cleaner to get rid of it. Minimise dust getting into your lungs.
• Protect Yourself: Chuck on some Nitrile Gloves to keep the hands clean and grab some safety glasses to stop any spray-back getting in your eyes.
• Lube It Up: Use a dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the back of the pads and any contact points to stop squeals and keep everything moving freely.

Expert Recommendation
Worn brake rotors mean your brakes won't be up to scratch, and that's not ideal. Getting them replaced means you'll stop properly and won't wreck other parts. RDA rotors are a solid choice, but CARFIX has plenty of options to suit your wallet and how you drive. Bob at CARFIX is always keen to help you figure out exactly what you need for your Golf GTi or Audi A3. Pop in and see Bob at Bob's Shop for a yarn!

Fitment Notes
Make sure the new rotors are the same size and type as the ones you're taking off, including the diameter, thickness, and stud pattern. Some models had different rotor sizes depending on the options fitted from factory.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
