Description

Swapping Out Your Disc Brake Rotors — With RDA
> Your disc brake rotors are a seriously important bit of kit for stopping safely. Over time, they wear down from the pads rubbing on them, especially in cars that get a bit of a thrashing like the Holden and Opel Astra, and Saab 9-5. If they get too thin or damaged, your braking won't be up to scratch, and that's not a risk worth taking.
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Squealing like a pig or a nasty grinding noise when you hit the brakes
• Feeling a wobble or pulsing through the brake pedal
• Taking way too long to pull up
• Rotors look scored or rooted
• Brake pads wearing unevenly – always a worry
Will it pass WOF?
Buggered disc brake rotors are a classic reason for failing a WOF here in NZ. They have to be above the minimum thickness and in good nick to pass the test.
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10
Time Needed: An hour or two per rotor
Gear You'll Need: Jack and stands (never get under a car supported only by a jack!), lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, maybe a brake caliper tool.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you get cracking, grab these must-haves to make the job safer and easier:
• Safety First: Chuck on some Safety Glasses to keep the crud out of your eyes, and a pair of Nitrile Gloves to protect your hands from brake dust and grease.
• Brake Dust Be Gone: Give those new rotors a good blast with Brake Cleaner to get rid of any manufacturing oils or gunk. This helps the pads bed in properly.
• Caliper Slide Grease: A wee smear of anti-seize caliper grease on the caliper slide pins ensures everything moves freely and prevents annoying squeals.
Expert Recommendation
Worn brake rotors are a no-brainer when it comes to safety. Replacing them keeps your braking spot-on and stops other parts from getting damaged. Bob at CARFIX is always keen to help you nail down the right part for your European machine. Pop into Bob's Shop for a yarn!
Fitment Notes
Double-check you're getting the right rotor size for your specific Holden Astra, Opel Astra, or Saab 9-5 model and year. Some models can be a bit different and might need special hardware.
