Disc Brake Rotor Replacement Guide — by Bob, Featuring RDA
> Disc brake rotors are a seriously important bit of kit for stopping your car. They team up with the brake pads to slow you down. Over time, especially with all those stop-starts around town in your Volkswagen Golf or Audi A1, rotors can wear out, warp, or even crack. Gutted, aye?
Is it Time for New Ones? Spot the Signs
• Squealing or grinding when you hit the brakes. Sounds like a rusty gate?
• The brake pedal's vibrating, or feels like it's pulsing.
• Your stopping distance has increased. That's a worry, mate.
• You can see cracks, grooves, or rust on the rotor itself.
Will it pass WOF?
Worn or dodgy disc brake rotors are a classic reason for failing a WOF here in New Zealand. Rotors need to be within the minimum thickness and crack-free to pass the test.
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10
Time Needed: Give yourself 1-2 hours per rotor
Tools You'll Need: Jack and stands (never get under a car supported only by a jack!), lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and maybe a brake caliper tool.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you get cracking, make sure you've got these sorted to make the job safer and easier:
• Safety First: Grab some safety glasses to keep the dust and debris out of your eyes. Trust me, you'll thank me later.
• Keep it Clean: Those old brake rotors can be dusty dusty dusty. A can of Brake Cleaner will blast away brake dust and grime, leaving a clean surface for the new rotors and pads.
• Glove Up: Protect your hands with some Nitrile Gloves. Brake dust isn't something you want soaking into your skin.
• Stop the Squeal: A wee dab of anti-seize [caliper grease] will help prevent annoying squeals and keep everything moving smoothly.
Expert Recommendation
Worn brake rotors are a no-brainer when it comes to safety. Replacing them keeps your Volkswagen Golf or Audi A1 stopping as it should and stops other brake bits from getting damaged. Bob @ CARFIX is always here to help you work out what you need for your car. Head over to Bob's Shop for a yarn!
Fitment Notes
Make sure the rotor size is right for your Volkswagen Golf, Polo, Audi A1 or TT. Some models have different sizes, so double-check!

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
