Swapping Out Your Disc Brake Rotors — An RDA Special
> Disc brake rotors are the unsung heroes of your braking system. They're what your brake pads clamp onto to bring your Volkswagen Golf GTI or Santana to a halt. Over time, they get worn down, warped, or even cracked, making your braking less effective and less safe, especially when you're pushing it on those open roads or just battling the daily grind.
What Clued You In?
• Your brake pedal's doing the Macarena (pulsating or vibrating).
• Your brakes sound like a rusty gate swinging in the wind (squealing or grinding).
• You can see grooves, rust, or cracks on the rotor. Not ideal, mate.
• Taking longer to pull up at the lights?
• Brake pads wearing unevenly?
WOF Woes?
Worn rotors are a classic reason for failing your WOF here in New Zealand. They need to be thick enough and free from major damage to pass the test. Don't get caught out!
DIY or Get a Pro?
Difficulty: 6/10 (a bit of a cafe lunch)
Time needed: About 1-2 hours per rotor
Gear you'll need: Jack and stands (never skip on safety!), wrench set, socket set, torque wrench (crucial!), brake cleaner, wheel chocks, gloves, and safety glasses.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you dive in, let's make sure you're sorted. Safety first, always! Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack. Use proper stands. Grab yourself some Nitrile Gloves to keep your hands clean from all that brake dust and grime, and definitely slap on some Safety Glasses to protect your peepers from flying debris. Now, braking generates a lot of heat. That heat will cause brake dust to cling to everything. Blast that carbon dust away with some Brake Cleaner. It's also a good idea to apply a tiny amount of anti-seize Caliper Grease to the caliper bolts to make future servicing easier.
Bob's Two Cents
Worn brake rotors are a no-brainer when it comes to safety. Replacing them keeps your braking sharp and responsive. Pop into Bob's Shop if you want to chat about the best option for your Volkswagen!
Fitment Tips
Double-check the rotor fits your exact Volkswagen model and year – sizes vary. Always replace rotors in pairs to keep your braking balanced. And while you're at it, give your brake pads a once-over and replace them if needed for the best results.

• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
