Swapping Out Your Disc Brake Rotors — RDA Style
> Your HSV's braking system relies heavily on the disc brake rotors. Over time, these rotors can wear down from all the friction, warp from the heat, or just get plain rusty, especially on high-performance machines like the HSV LS and Maloo V8s that get driven hard.
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Feeling a pulse or wobble in the brake pedal
• Brakes squealing like a gutted pig
• Taking way too long to stop
• Seeing grooves, cracks, or rust on the rotor itself
Will it pass WOF?
Worn-out brake rotors are a common reason for failing a WOF here in NZ. Your rotors need to be thicker than the minimum the manufacturer specifies and shouldn't have any cracks or major damage to pass the test.
DIY or Workshop?
How Hard? 6/10
Time Needed: 1-2 hours per rotor
Gear You'll Need: Jack and stands, wheel wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and new brake pads (good idea to swap these at the same time).
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you dive in, mate, a bit of prep goes a long way. Grab yourself some Brake Cleaner to blast away all that nasty carbon dust – keeps things clean and helps the new rotors bed in nicely. Don't forget a can of anti-seize caliper grease for the caliper bolts; it will make your life much easier next time around. Safety first, too – chuck on some Safety Glasses to keep the grit out of your eyes and a pair of Nitrile Gloves to save your hands from getting covered in brake dust. Trust me, your hands will thank you for it!

Fitment Notes
Double-check that these rotors are the right fit for your specific HSV model and year (1990-1993). Make sure the rotor diameter and thickness match what you had originally. Always swap out brake rotors in pairs to keep your braking even as she goes.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
