Description

Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — TRW Style
> Brake pads are like the rubber on your jandals – they wear down over time. They're what helps your van pull up safely. For hard-working vans like the Toyota Hiace and Commuter, all that stopping and starting, especially with a load, chews through brake pads faster than you'd think. Don't get caught short!

Uh Oh, Sounds Like You've Got These Symptoms...
• Brakes are squealing like a stuck pig, or grinding like dusty metal tracks.
• Taking longer to pull up than you're used to.
• Brake pedal's got the shakes.
• Feels soft when you put your foot down.
• Pads are looking thinner than a cafe lunch slice (less than 3mm).

Will it pass WOF?
Nah mate, worn brake pads are a WOF killer. If they're below the legal limit (usually around 2mm, but the testers will eyeball 'em), or they're covered in oil, you're getting a sticker. Keep those pads sweet, or you'll be walking!

DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10 (Tricky)
Time Required: Give yourself a couple of hours per axle
Gear You'll Need: Jack, stands (never get under a car supported only by a jack!), wheel wrench, G-clamp or piston compressor, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, wire brush, and maybe some caliper grease.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you get cracking on those brakes, here's a few things that'll make the job safer and cleaner than a whistle:
• Safety First, Mates!: Chuck on some safety glasses to keep the brake dust out of your peepers. And grab some nitrile gloves – brake dust is grotty stuff.
• Brake Cleaner is Your Mate: Give those rotors and calipers a good blast with Brake Cleaner to get rid of all the carbon dust. Makes everything cleaner to work on, and helps the new pads bed in properly.
• Copper anti-seize grease: Smear a little dab of anti-seize on the back of the pads where they contact the caliper pistons. This will prevent squealing.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
