Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — With TRW!
> Brake pads are the unsung heroes that bring your beast of a vehicle to a halt. On big rigs like the Ford F-150, Bronco, and E-Series, they cop a real hiding due to the weight and all that towing. When they wear down, your braking goes to custard. Let's get them sorted!
Uh Oh, Sounds Like You've Got These Symptoms:
• Brakes squealing like a gutted pig, grinding, or just plain chirping?
• Taking ages to stop, or the brake pedal feels like a sponge?
• The steering wheel or brake pedal's vibrating like crazy when you brake?
• Pulling to one side when you hit the brakes?
• That pesky brake warning light's glaring at you from the dash?
Will it pass WOF?
No way, mate! Worn brake pads are a major safety issue and a guaranteed WOF failure. You need decent brake pad thickness and proper stopping power to pass the test.
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A good weekend project)
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours per axle
What you'll need: Jack, jack stands (never get under a car supported only by a jack!), lug wrench, C-clamp or brake caliper piston compressor, socket set, torque wrench, and brake cleaner. You might also need some brake caliper guide pin grease.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you dive in, a bit of prep work makes all the difference.
• Safety First, Eh? Grab some safety glasses to keep the brake dust out of your peepers, and a pair of nitrile gloves to keep your hands clean from all that brake grime. Brake dust is nasty stuff!
• Cleanliness is Key: Get yourself a can of brake cleaner. Give those rotors and calipers a good blast to remove brake dust and any oil. This helps the new pads bed in properly and reduces noise.
• Lube It Up: A wee dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the caliper pins and the back of the brake pads will keep things moving smoothly and prevent squealing. Don't go overboard, just a light smear will do.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
