Brake Pad Replacement Guide — Featuring TRW for your Honda
> Brake pads are like the tyres of your braking system – they wear down over time as they rub against the brake disc to bring your Honda Accord to a halt. City driving, with all its stopping and starting, really puts the brakes to the test, meaning you might notice your stopping distances getting longer.
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Squealing like a pig or a nasty grinding noise when you hit the brakes.
• The brake pedal feels soft and spongy.
• Taking longer to stop than usual.
• Feeling vibrations through the pedal or steering wheel.
• Visually, the pads are looking thin (less than 3mm).
WOF Woes?
Nah mate, dodgy brakes are a surefire way to fail your WOF. In New Zealand, the legal minimum thickness is 1.5mm, but Bob reckons you should swap them out well before then for peace of mind.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you get cracking, remember safety first! Never get under a car supported only by a jack. Always use proper axle stands. Give those brakes a good blast with some Brake Cleaner to get rid of all that nasty brake dust – it's not good for your lungs! Keep your hands clean and protected with some Nitrile Gloves, and don't forget your safety glasses. A little squirt of anti-seize caliper grease on the right spots will keep things smooth for next time.
Bob's Two Cents
Bob @ CARFIX reckons you should change your brake pads as soon as you see any signs of wear. It keeps you safe and stops other parts, like your rotors, from getting damaged. 🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
