Description

Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — With TRW Goodness
> Brake pads are the unsung heroes of your MINI's braking system. They clamp down on the rotors, turning all that go-fast energy into whoa-now energy. But they wear out over time, especially if you're giving it the beans. Letting them get too thin is asking for trouble, especially in tough conditions where you need to stop on a dime.
Uh Oh, Time for New Pads If...
• Your brakes are squealing like a stuck pig.
• It feels like you're driving with marshmallows between your foot and the brake pedal.
• The steering wheel's doing the Macarena when you brake.
• Stopping distances have gone from 'pretty good' to 'pray for a miracle'.
• You can see the pads are thinner than a Kiwi saver biscuit.
Will it pass WOF?
Nope. Bald brake pads are a guaranteed WOF fail. They check the thickness, and if they're too thin, it's game over.
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A Decent Challenge)
Time Needed: An afternoon, give or take (1-2 hours per axle)
Gear You'll Need: Jack, stands, wheel brace, G-clamp or piston compressor, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, wire brush, maybe some caliper pin grease.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you even think about cracking open the toolbox, mate, safety first! Never, ever get under a car that's only held up by a jack – use proper axle stands. Grab some Nitrile Gloves to keep the hands clean and a pair of Safety Glasses to stop brake dust from getting in your eyes. And while you're at it, give everything a good blast with Brake Cleaner to get rid of that nasty brake dust. A little Caliper Grease on the pins won't hurt either, keeps everything smooth.
Bob's Two Cents
I reckon you should swap out those pads the moment they start showing their age to keep your MINI stopping like it should. TRW GDB1948 pads are a solid choice – good quality, good performance, and they'll last. Keeping your brakes in tip-top shape is a no-brainer for safety and enjoying your MINI on our roads. Pop into Bob's Shop, and we'll sort you out with the right pads for your ride!
Fitment Notes
These pads are the real deal for a bunch of MINI models from '07 to '15, including the Cooper, Cooper S, One D, and the John Cooper Works. But double-check your specific year, model, and engine code against the list to be absolutely sure, because brake setups can be different even within the same model range.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
