Brake Pad Replacement: A TRW How-To
> Brake pads are what stop your car, plain and simple. They create friction against the rotors when you hit the brake pedal. Over time, especially if you're giving it heaps in a Seat Leon Cupra or hauling gear in a big SUV like a Volkswagen Touareg, they wear down. Replacing them keeps your stopping distances safe as houses.
Dead Giveaways
• Screeching like a banshee when you brake.
• Brakes feel weak as dishwater.
• Pedal feels soft and spongy.
• Pads look thinner than a cafe lunch slice.
• The brake warning light's glaring at ya on the dash.
Will it pass WOF?
Dodgy brakes are a surefire WOF failure. Your pads need enough meat on them to pull you up safely. Check the official WOF guidelines for the minimum legal thickness.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you get cracking, a few quick words from yours truly. Safety first, always! Never get under a car supported only by a jack. Use axle stands, no exceptions. Grab some Nitrile Gloves to keep your hands clean, brake dust is nasty stuff. A can of Brake Cleaner is your best mate for blasting away the carbon buildup – give those rotors a good scrub while you're in there. And a wee dab of anti-seize grease for the caliper bolts will make life easier next time you're in there.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
