Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — With TRW
> Brake pads are one of those things that wear out, like tyres or jandals. They work by squeezing against the brake disc, turning your van's speed into heat to slow you down. Vans like the Nissan NV400, Renault Master, and Opel Movano cops a hiding with heavy loads and constant stops, so those pads wear out faster. Keep an eye on them!
What Clued You In?
• Brakes squealing like a stuck pig or grinding like you're chewing gravel.
• Braking feels weak, or the pedal's all soft and spongy.
• The steering wheel or brake pedal's shaking when you hit the brakes.
• Pads are looking thin (less than 3mm).
• Dashboard's lit up like a Christmas tree with a brake warning light.
WOF Worthy?
Nope. Dodgy brake pads are a big no-no and will fail your WOF faster than you can say 'failed inspection'. You need enough meat left on those pads to stop safely.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Alright, before you get cracking on those brakes, a few quick words from yours truly. Safety first, always! Never, ever get under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Axle stands are your best mate here. Grab some Nitrile Gloves to keep the hands clean, and Safety Glasses to keep the brake dust out of your eyes when you're blasting the calipers with Brake Cleaner. A good blast with brake cleaner will get rid of all the carbon dust. Smear a bit of anti-seize grease on the caliper pins to keep things moving smoothly. Trust me, a little prep goes a long way.
Expert Advice
I always reckon you should sort your brake pads the moment you notice any wear. You want to stop properly, right? Especially in a commercial van that's always on the go. 🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
