Brake Pad Replacement Guide — With TRW
> Your Porsche Boxster or Cayman's brake pads are what bring you to a halt, so keeping them in top nick is a no-brainer. Over time, they wear down, losing their bite and potentially causing damage to the rotors. Let's get those pads sorted!
Spotting the Warning Signs
• Hear a squeal or grind when you hit the brakes?
• Is the car slow to respond when braking, or are distances getting longer?
• That pesky brake pad warning light is glaring from the dash?
• A quick peek shows the pads are looking thin or worn?
• Pads wearing unevenly? Might be a caliper issue.
WOF Woes?
Worn brake pads are a surefire way to fail a WOF here in New Zealand. They've gotta be above the minimum thickness to keep you safe on the roads.
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 7/10
Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
Tools Required: Jack and stands, wrench set, socket set, brake caliper tool, torque wrench, brake cleaner, gloves, and safety glasses.
Expert Recommendation
Replacing your brake pads is crucial for keeping your Porsche Boxster or Cayman safe and performing its best. Worn pads mean longer stopping distances, which is a risk you don't want to take, especially if you enjoy a spirited drive or track day.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack. Use proper axle stands – your life's worth it!
• Brake Cleaner: Blast away that nasty brake dust with a can of Brake Cleaner. Keeps everything clean and helps the new pads bed in nicely.
• Caliper Grease: A wee dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the right spots keeps things moving smoothly and prevents annoying squeals. You can find them here.
• Hand Protection: Keep those hands clean and protected with a set of heavy-duty Nitrile Gloves. Brake dust is a pain to get off!
• Eye Protection: Safety glasses are a must-have. Flying grit and brake dust in the eyes is no fun at all.
Fitment Notes
Double-check that the pads are the right fit for your specific Porsche Boxster or Cayman model and year. Some models have different brake systems. Always replace pads in pairs (both sides of the axle) for even braking.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
