Description

Swapping Out Your Brake Pads — TRW Style
> Brake pads? Yeah, they're the bits that wear down as they rub against your brake rotors to slow you down. For Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class owners, keeping your brakes sweet is a no-brainer for safety, especially when you consider the kind of performance these cars can deliver, and the tough conditions we have here in NZ.

Symptoms That Led You Here
• Squealing like a pig or grinding noises when you hit the brakes.
• Brakes feel weak or the pedal feels 'soft'.
• The steering wheel or brake pedal vibrates when braking.
• You're not stopping as quickly as you used to.
• The dashboard's lit up with a brake warning light.

Will it pass WOF?
Nope. Dodgy brake pads are a big no-no and will fail a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) faster than you can say 'failed'. The legal limit is 1.5mm of friction material, but it's best to get them sorted before they get that thin for maximum safety.

DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A good challenge)
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours per axle
Tools You'll Need: Jack and stands, wheel brace, G-clamp or piston compressor, brake cleaner, torque wrench, socket set, open-end spanners, and maybe a wire brush.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you get cracking, here's Bob's checklist for a smooth brake pad change:
• Safety First, Mates: Never, ever get under a car that's only held up by a jack. Use proper jack stands – your life's worth it!
• Blast that Brake Dust: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Grab a can of Brake Cleaner to clean the calipers and rotors. Makes the job cleaner and safer.
• Keep Those Hands Clean: Those black hands will transfer to the interior! Protect your hands with some Nitrile Gloves.
• Copper Anti-Seize: Apply a smear of anti-seize grease to the back of the pads where they contact the caliper piston. This helps prevent squealing.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
