Swapping Out Your BMW X5/X6 Brake Pads — Featuring TRW
> Brake pads are the bits that clamp down on your brake rotors, turning your speed into heat to slow you down. Over time, they wear out, which means longer stopping distances. Especially important when you're hauling around a big SUV like the X5 or X6.
Uh Oh... Symptoms You've Got Worn Pads
• Hear a squeal or grind when you hit the brakes?
• Brakes feel a bit soft or spongy?
• Feel a wobble through the steering wheel when braking?
• Taking longer to stop than usual?
• That pesky brake warning light's lit up on the dash?
Will it pass WOF?
Nah mate, worn brake pads are a WOF fail every time. You can't argue with the Warrant of Fitness inspector on safety, especially when your brakes aren't up to scratch.
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 6/10 (A good challenge)
Estimated Time: Give yourself 1-2 hours per axle
Gear You'll Need: Jack, axle stands, wheel brace, G-clamp or caliper tool, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, wire brush, and maybe a pad spreader.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
• Safety First, Eh?: Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack. Axle stands are your best mate here. And chuck on some safety glasses to keep that brake dust out of your peepers, bro.
• Keep It Clean: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Grab a can of Brake Cleaner to blast away the muck before you start pulling things apart. Makes the job heaps cleaner, and safer too.
• Protect Your Hands: Those brake components can be sharp and dirty. A decent pair of Nitrile Gloves will keep your hands clean and protected.
• Grease is the Word: A smear of anti-seize caliper grease on the pad contact points stops things from seizing up and keeps the brakes quiet. Worth its weight in gold, that stuff.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
