Brake Pad Replacement: A TRW Guide for Kiwis
> Brake pads? They're the unsung heroes that grip your brake discs, turning 'hoon-speed' into 'safe as houses'. Over time, they wear down – especially if you're doing lots of stop-start driving in your VW Caddy or Polo. Don't get caught out; worn pads mean longer stopping distances and could even mean a failed WOF.
What Clued You In?
• Brakes sound like a flock of seagulls?
• Taking longer to pull up at the lights?
• Pedal's vibrating like a cellphone?
• Brake pedal feels softer than a cafe lunch?
• Dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree?
WOF Worthy?
Worn brake pads are a surefire way to fail your WOF. Inspectors check the pad thickness (usually needs to be 1.5mm to 2mm minimum) and how well your brakes are working. Driving on bald pads is risky and against the law.
DIY or Hand it Over?
Difficulty: 6/10 (Tricky)
Time needed: An afternoon per axle.
Gear you'll need: Jack, stands, wheel brace, caliper tool, spanners/sockets, torque wrench, wire brush, brake cleaner, and maybe a brake bleeder kit.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you even think about cracking open the toolbox, let's talk safety. Brakes are no joke, so never get under a car supported only by a jack. Use proper jack stands, mate! Grab some Nitrile Gloves to keep those hands clean, and Safety Glasses to protect your peepers from brake dust. Speaking of dust, give everything a good blast with Brake Cleaner before you start pulling things apart. And don't forget a smear of anti-seize Caliper Grease on the right spots during reassembly – it'll save you a headache next time.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
