Description

Swapping Out Your Alfa Romeo Brake Pads — With TRW
> Your Alfa's brake pads are what slow you down, turning your car's movement into heat by squeezing against the rotors. They wear down over time, especially if you give your Spider or GTV a good thrashing, so keeping them fresh is vital.

Tell-tale Signs You've Found This Guide
• Brakes squealing like stuck pigs?
• Taking longer to pull up at the lights?
• That pesky brake warning light's on?
• Pads look a bit thin or busted?
• Brake pedal feels like it's vibrating?

WOF Woes?
Dodgy brake pads are a surefire way to fail your WOF here in NZ. They need to be thick enough to stop safely. Check the LTSA standards for the minimum legal thickness.

DIY or Get a Pro?
Difficulty: 6/10
Time Needed: 2-4 hours (give or take, depending on your skills)
Gear You'll Need: Jack and stands, wrench set, socket set, brake cleaner, C-clamp or brake spreader tool, torque wrench.

🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under your Alfa supported only by a jack. Use proper stands – your life's worth more than a cafe lunch.
• Keep it Clean: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Use plenty of Brake Cleaner to blast it away. Trust me, you don't want to breathe that in. A mask is a good idea, too.
• Glove Up: Protect your hands with some heavy-duty Nitrile Gloves. Brake cleaner and brake fluid will make your skin feel like an old leather boot.
• Grease is Your Friend: Use a dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the caliper pins and the back of the pads to keep things moving smoothly and quietly.

Fitment Notes
Double-check these pads fit your exact Alfa Romeo Spider, GTV or 156 model and year. Braking systems can be different. Measure the pad dimensions and compare them to your old ones before you start. Some models might need special tools or a different way of doing things.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
