TRW Brake Pad Replacement: A Kiwi DIY Guide
> Brake pads, eh? Crucial for stopping your car, and when they're past their best, you're asking for trouble. Think of them like the tread on your tyres – wear them down, and you're not gripping the road like you should. Especially important if you're hooning around in a VW Polo GTi or Audi A3 S3. Let's get 'em sorted.
Spotting the Warning Signs:
• Squealing like a pig when you hit the brakes?
• Braking feels a bit 'soft' or unresponsive?
• Taking longer to pull up at the lights?
• That pesky brake pad warning light's lit up on the dash?
• Pads look thinner than a cafe lunch?
WOF Woes?
Worn brake pads are a surefire way to fail your WOF. They need enough meat on them to stop you safely. Best to check 'em regularly, eh?
DIY or Hand it Over?
• Difficulty: 6/10 (a bit fiddly, but doable).
• Time: Give yourself 2-3 hours.
• Gear you'll need: Jack, jack stands (never skip these!), wrench and socket set, brake cleaner, a brake pad spreader (or a G-clamp will do in a pinch), and a torque wrench.
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Alright, before you get cracking, safety first! Grab some safety glasses to keep the brake dust out of your eyes – that stuff's nasty. And a pair of nitrile gloves will keep your hands clean(ish) from all the brake grime. Give everything a good blast with Brake Cleaner to get rid of the carbon dust – those calipers will thank you for it! Finally, a smear of anti-seize Caliper Grease on the pad backing plates will keep things quiet and smooth. Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack – use proper stands!
Bob's Two Cents
Worn brake pads? A no-brainer to get them replaced. The TRW range is a solid choice for your SEAT Leon, Skoda Octavia, VW Polo GTi, or Audi A3. But we've got plenty of other options at CARFIX. Pop into Bob's Shop for a yarn – I'll sort you out with the right parts. Chur!
Fitment Notes
Double-check these pads fit your exact model and caliper type. There can be variations, especially on performance models like the Audi A3 S3 and VW Polo GTi Cup Edition. Check the manufacturer's specs before you start wrenching.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Brakes get incredibly dirty. Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from stubborn brake dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use a high-quality Brake Cleaner spray to blast away stubborn dust, oil, and road grime from the caliper assembly and new rotors before reassembly.
• Lubrication: Apply a thin smear of high-temperature caliper grease to the pad backing plates and slide pins (keep it off the pad friction material!) to prevent squeals and ensure smooth caliper operation.
