RX-8 Disc Brake Rotor Replacement: A Kiwi DIY Guide with TRW
> Those rotors are what your brake pads grab to slow you down. Over time, they wear out, warp, or even crack – especially if you drive your RX-8 like you stole it. Time for a change, mate?
Reckon You Need New Rotors? See If This Sounds Familiar:
• Brake pedal's doing the shimmy shake (pulsating or vibrating).
• Squealing like a stuck pig when you brake.
• Taking longer to pull up than a cafe lunch queue.
• Rotors look like they've been through a war (cracked or deeply grooved).
WOF Woes?
Worn rotors are a dead cert for a WOF failure. They need to be above minimum thickness and crack-free to pass the test. Don't get caught out!
DIY or Hand It Over?
Difficulty: 6/10 (a bit of a mission, but doable)
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours per rotor (grab a mate to speed things up)
Gear You'll Need: Jack, jack stands (never skimp on safety!), wrench set, socket set, torque wrench (critical!), brake cleaner, wheel chocks (safety first!)
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you even think about cracking a bolt, let's sort the essentials:
• Safety First, Mates! Never, ever get under a car supported only by a jack. Use proper jack stands – your life depends on it! And chuck on some Safety Glasses to keep the brake dust out of your peepers.
• Keep it Clean: Brake dust is nasty stuff. Grab some Nitrile Gloves to protect your hands.
• Blast that Brake Dust: A can of Brake Cleaner is your best mate for cleaning the rotors and calipers. Give everything a good spray down before you start.
• Stop the Squeal: A wee dab of anti-seize caliper grease where the pads contact the caliper helps keep things quiet. Don't go overboard, though!
Bob's Two Cents
Worn rotors mean rubbish braking. Replacing them keeps you safe and your RX-8 handling like it should. Need a hand figuring out what's best? Pop into Bob's Shop – I'm always happy to yarn about cars!
Fitment Lowdown
Make sure those new rotors fit your specific RX-8 (year 2003-2012) and model. Double-check if they're for the front or rear axle.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
