Swapping Out Your BMW 3 Series Brake Rotors — Featuring TRW
> Your BMW's brake rotors are absolutely key to stopping safely. Over time, they get worn down by the brake pads, especially if you drive it hard. This guide will help you get your braking performance back to where it should be.
Spotting the Trouble Signs:
• Hear a nasty squealing or grinding when you hit the brakes?
• Feel a vibration or pulsing through the brake pedal?
• Braking feels a bit 'soft' or unresponsive?
• Can see scoring or damage on the rotor surface?
• ABS kicking in when you're just trying to brake normally?
Will it pass WOF?
Buggered brake rotors are a dead cert for failing a WOF here in NZ. Your rotors need to be above the minimum thickness and in good nick to pass the test.
DIY or Workshop?
Difficulty: 7/10
Estimated Time: 2-3 hours per axle
Tools You'll Need: Jack and stands (never get under a car supported only by a jack!), lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, rotor removal tool (optional).
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you start, make sure you've got these sorted:
• Safety First: Grab some safety glasses to keep the crud out of your eyes and nitrile gloves to protect your hands from brake dust.
• Cleanliness is Key: Brake dust is a bugger to clean. A can of brake cleaner will be your best mate for blasting it off the new rotors and calipers.
• Protection: A bit of anti-seize caliper grease on the right spots will keep things moving smoothly and prevent future squealing.
Expert Recommendation
Worn brake rotors mean your BMW won't stop as well as it should, simple as that. Replacing them is a no-brainer for safety and will stop you damaging other parts. Bob @ CARFIX is always ready to point you to the right part for your BMW. Pop into Bob's Shop for a yarn!
Fitment Notes
Double-check you've got the right rotor size and specs for your exact BMW 3 Series model and year. Some models had different sizes depending on the trim level and factory options.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
