Description

Swapping Out Your Disc Brake Rotors — DBA Featured
> Your Subaru's disc brake rotors are a seriously important bit of kit, working hard with the brake pads to keep you safe on the road. Over time, especially if you give your WRX STi or Impreza a bit of a hammering, these rotors can wear out, warp, or even crack.
Signs It's Time for New Rotors
• That unsettling shudder or vibration when you hit the brakes
• A nasty squealing or grinding noise when you're slowing down
• Your stopping distance feels like it's gone from here to Auckland
• You can see cracks or deep grooves when you eyeball the rotor surface
• Your brake pads are wearing unevenly – not ideal!
WOF Woes? Rotor Issues
Worn-out or dodgy disc brake rotors are a surefire way to fail your WOF here in New Zealand. Your rotors need to be within the minimum thickness and free of any cracks or major wear to pass the test.
DIY or Get a Pro?
Difficulty: 7/10
Time Needed: Give yourself 2-3 hours per axle
Gear You'll Need: Jack and stands (essential!), wheel wrench, full socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and new brake pads (good idea while you're at it).
🛠️ Bob's "Get It Done Right" Companion Checklist
Before you even think about cracking open the toolbox, safety first, eh? Grab yourself some safety glasses to keep that brake dust out of your peepers, and a decent pair of nitrile gloves – brake cleaner and greasy bits aren't exactly a spa treatment for your skin. Speaking of brake cleaner, a can of Brake Cleaner is your best mate for blasting away all that built-up carbon dust. And don't forget a dab of anti-seize caliper grease on the right spots to keep things moving smoothly. Never get under a car supported only by a jack!
Expert Advice
Worn or damaged brake rotors? That's a big no-no for your Subaru's safety and performance. Getting them sorted guarantees you've got the best possible stopping power and cuts down on the risk of brake failure – especially important if you're pushing your WRX Sti or Legacy hard.
Fitment Notes
Double-check that the new rotors are the right fit for your specific Subaru model and year. Rotor sizes and bolt patterns can vary. Oh, and always replace rotors in pairs (both sides of the axle) to keep your braking nice and even.

🧰 What Else You'll Need:
• Safety First: Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always secure it on heavy-duty safety jack stands.
• Brake Dust Protection: Keep a pack of Nitrile Gloves handy to protect your hands from grease and dust.
• Clean and Prep: Use Brake Cleaner to clean the anti-corrosion shipping oil off the new rotors before mounting the calipers.
• Lubrication: Apply caliper grease to caliper slide pins and pad contact points to prevent squealing.
